Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor which reduces the level of both types (type-1 and type-2) of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and is also used as an off label treatment for male pattern hair loss. Lowering Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels will result to a shrinkage of the enlarged prostate gland.
