Clonazepam belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. It is prescribed to treat panic disorders, certain types of seizure disorders and insomnia by restoring balance of brain chemicals.
Clonazepam can be taken oral as a tablet or as an injection. The drug is recommended for use up to nine weeks, but not for a longer term, due it could cause addiction symptoms in the patient.
The half-time of Clonazepam is at least 18 hours so it is not the last lasting benzodiazepine but one of the strongest ones.
A gradual decrease of dosage is recommended, otherwise benzodiazepine withdrawal syndromes will result which are characterized by psychotic episodes, dysphoric manifestations, bad temper, anxiety and hallucinations.
